Antoinette Sithole
Perhaps the most famous image depicting the brutality of the Apartheid regime, and the sacrifices of those who struggled against it, is that of 12-year-old Hector Pieterson, who was shot and killed during the 1976 Soweto Uprising. In the now-iconic photograph, Pieterson is carried by another student while his sister, Antoinette Sithole, walks alongside. Today, Antoinette works to keep not only the memory of her brother but of the struggle he died for, alive. Antoinette works as a guide at the Hector Pieterson Memorial and Museum, and works with student groups to teach them about South Africa’s political history, encouraging them to adopt a similar spirit of unity and self-determination as the students who fought for their rights in 1976.
